Hello! This is my Auckland. Let's talk about it physically first. Bounded by the Link route ($1.60 to go all the way round), it’s a hilly, city space, a series of villages that are close to one to another but all quite individual. Move between them by marching heartily, or by drifting around on the aforementioned bus service. Names like Freeman's Bay, Grey Lynn, Parnell and Grafton reflect the places' British settlement (e.g. Ponsonby was named after an Officer who served at Waterloo). On an experiential level it's the place where I live, work and create. I love Auckland - every little bit of it; from the cafe I always buy my "writing" coffee, to the secret waterfall in a local courtyard, to our Saturday night hangouts. To show you
this side of the place I've made a map, put together selection of my
favourite Auckland photos and added some pithy notes. Love, |

Auckland is a creative city because of the people. It’s one of the most multicultural places in the world - my friends are Pakeha, Malaysian Indian,, Lebanese, Maori, Korean, Scottish, Fijian and a sexy mish mash of many other cultures. It’s this mix that makes Auckland such a stimulating place. I could buy my groceries at the Asian supermarket, smoke Turkish pipes on K Road, feast on Yakitori skewers for dinner and watch a band from Melbourne – all on one average evening. As for the creative industries; filmmakers and writers pool in the valleys of Grey Lynn and Ponsonby. K Road is a hot spot for fashion designers (there are many studios above street level) and graphic design studios, well they’re in all sorts of nooks and crannies. Auckland has a booming craft scene with markets like Krafbomb, Craftwerk and Crafternoon Tea happening regularly. It's a growing, dynamic place and I am proud to call it my home. Tools: A moleskine, an inky black pen for notes. I captured the photos (including the collage images) using a Canon 450D, Sony Cybershot, Canon AE-1, Nokia camera phone and a handful of 35mm disposable cameras. An open mind and insatiable curiosity.
